My son's sneakers are very stinky because of urine. They are dry and still smelly. What should I do with them?
Soak them in water? With soap?

Thanks for your help!

If you can, put them in the washing machine and wash them.

If you're afraid to machine-wash, rinse with plenty of cold water, then soak in water to which you've added a goodly quantity of baking soda. Rinse again, lather with mild soap for good measure, rinse and dry.

If you're afraid to do even that, sprinkle dry baking soda inside and all over the shoes, work into the fabric, let sit for a few days, brush off.

Or spray with Lysol spray or Febreze. or plain vinegar, which will neutralize the ammonia in the urine, but realize that the urine will still be in the fabric. It won't kill anybody, but there's the "yuck factor" to consider. OTOH, shoes come into contact with dog poop, bugs, rotten banana peels and other pleasant stuff, so the "yuck factor" is already there.

We're going through this with my semi-toilet trained DD. I toss them in the wash, usually in my shmatta load in case they're really gross on the soles.

If they are not fabric that can be washed, I shake a LOT of baking soda on the inside and spray the outside with Lysol.

And I let my kids who are pottytraining go barefoot a lot. Yes

And if you do wash, allow them to air dry. THe dryer can ruin the soles.

I've found boiling water to be the best: really VERY HOT water. You can soak in the hot water for a little while then wring out what you can with your hands. I find that takes the smell away, and the laundry takes out the dirt afterward.
